Victory for Nailsea 4ths
By Nailsea_CC | Monday, June 28, 2010, 21:27
On a glorious afternoon at the Grove and with a much depleted bowling
attack Nailsea finally put their demons behind them.
Prior to the
match both sides observed a minutes silence in memory of team mate
Geoff Leason who died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday.
Winning
the toss Nailsea had no hesitation in batting on one of the best
wickets in the league. The decision was born out as openers K. Bell (46)
and Taya (21) got the home side off to a solid start putting on 68
before the first wicket fell in the 14th over to a run out. Caine senior
and Parsons continued the momentum prior to under 13 Robbie Riddick
making his senior debut with 13. The home side then wobbled reminiscent
of England of old loosing four wickets with the score unchanged on 137.
It looked like batting out the 40 overs was an optimistic hope, but a
rearguard display by young Matt Caine with a belligerent 58 not out and
Alan Rogerson's 9th wicket partnership of 70 runs saw a decent total of
227 posted.
Bitton's innings got of to a slow start and they soon
found themselves falling behind the run rate thanks to openers Ashman
(who struck in the 11th over with a caught behind and finished his 8
overs with 1 for 27) and the frugal Rich Billows (having the replacement
batsman sent back immediately for nought nonchalantly caught at square
leg by Andy Caine and going for just 19 from his 8 overs). With only 52
runs off the first 16 overs it looked as if victory was assured but an
untested change of bowling saw things swing back in the visitors favour
with 50 runs coming from the next 5 overs.
Boundaries and extras
(47 all told) were coming at a worrying rate but wickets were also
falling regularly. With Green and Rogerson taking 5 wickets between them
but conceding 122 runs it was nip and tuck until Taya removed the last
two wickets for just 7 runs from his two overs.
