Portugal has become one of the most intriguing holiday destinations in Europe. It offers a unique combination of sun, sea, sand and culture and is becoming an increasingly popular destination for holidaymakers from all over Europe. Boasting some of the most beautiful and well-maintained villas anywhere in the world, it is the perfect destination to consider if you enjoy the freedom and independence villa holidays provide.
In case you’re thinking of booking your villa and jumping on a plane to Portugal, but haven’t got a clue about where you’d like to stay, we’ve compiled this guide to our three favourite tourist regions.
The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal and is world-renowned as a high quality tourist hot spot. Famous for its beautiful white, sandy coastal stretches, deliciously fresh seafood and welcoming local population, the Algarve is one of our top regions in which to rent a villa.
For the committed sunbather there are over 190km (approximately 118 miles) of pristine beaches available to use. If you like a little local culture, the city of Lagos provides the opportunity to wander through tiny, winding streets as you browse the shops, take a bite to eat or stop for a quick drink or two.
The Algarve does tend to be one of the busiest tourist destinations in Portugal during the summer months, which means that there is always plenty to do and see in the vibrant streets. Overall, the Algarve is a fantastic region to take into consideration if you’re thinking of renting villas in Portugal.
The Silver Coast region of Portugal provides you with the opportunity to soak up the best of Portuguese culture. Located in the area of coast running from the capital city of Lisbon to Porto, it is a less well-known area than the Algarve and attracts far fewer tourists.
The Silver Coast offers the best compromise for those who like to switch between relaxing on the beach and immersing themselves in the culture of the local towns and villages.
The vineyard covered rolling hills of the Douro Valley offer some of the most stunning scenery in all of Portugal. Nestled along the sprawling hillsides that line the Douro River, the region has great access to the historical city of Porto and the wonders of the Costa Verde coastline.
The time of year that you plan to visit the Douro Valley will greatly affect the surrounding countryside, so make sure you plan ahead. If you plan a trip in autumn you’ll witness the spectacular red and golden tinge that lines the hills, whilst in spring the blossom covers the whole region in a beautiful white and pink hue: plan your trip to suit your needs and you’ll have a wonderful visit.
