    On Saturday, July 24, the eighth annual Nailsea Community Skate Festival was staged at Millennium Park, Nailsea.
    The event started in 2003 shortly after the skate park next to Scotch Horn opened and this year saw a record number of more than 40 entries and hundreds of spectators.
    2010 saw two new scooter categories to the competition that ran along side two BMX categories, three skateboard categories and two roller blade categories.
    Entertainment played throughout the afternoon which was organised by Holy Trinity and Trendlewood churches http://tinyurl.com/25jsn6n and Christian Surfers UK.
    Live music was provided by two talented acts, singer/song writer Tash McCoy who came all the way from Kent, and Diego, an Indie Rock band from Bristol.
    In addition the DJ providing the sounds to skate by were provided Gloucester based DJ Steve Clark.
    Event director Phil Williams said: “A big thanks to all of them for supporting us.”
    Surrounding the park were numerous marquees and tents, and a mobile cinema showing previous competitions.
    As well as refreshments which included crepes and a barbecue there were some reflective areas with sofas for people to think and/or record their thoghts.
    Phil said: “We was very pleased with the success of this years festival, and for the eighth year running there was no rain what so ever, so someone must be looking after us.
    “I would like to thank all involved in not only the funding of this event, but also to the 70+ volunteers, in the main from Holy Trinity and Trendlewood churches, who gave up their time to put on a great community event.”
    Support also came from North Somerset Council, Nailsea Town Council, Nailsea Community Trust, Nailsea & District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, the church community and Christian Surfers UK who oversee the skate festival and bring all the safety gear and expertise.
    Phil added: “Our biggest thanks must go to the competitors, all of which behaved impeccably throughout and put on a great display for the hundreds of spectators, parents, supporters and friends, who enjoyed the atmosphere around the park for the afternoon.”
    Trophies at the prize giving were presented by Holy Trinity vicar, the Rev Jolyon Trickey.
    Stand out winners included Dan Brain who wowed the crowed with some incredible somersaults in the roller blade category, James Threlfall, of Melksham, the outstanding over 15 skate winner and Jamie Richards, aged eight, of Cardiff, who won the u12s skate category.
    Homegrown talent included scooter u12s champion Liam Strawford and DJ who took the over 12s title.
    BMX winners included u14s champ Ben Edney, of Nailsea,and over 14s Liam Cottey.
