As the new cricket season draws near, there’s plenty going on at Nailsea Cricket Club and Sunday, March 21, could be one of the busiest days in the pre-season calendar.

The day kicks off at 9.30am at the Grove Sports Centre, St Mary's Grove, when club members and volunteers will be assembling the outdoor nets ready for pre-season training to begin.

Nailsea have some of the finest training facilities in the area and would welcome anyone interested to come along, check out the preparations and stay around for events later in the day.

Then, at 11.30am the whole club will be holding a fun run/walk around the Grove playing fields, in aid of Sport Relief 2010.

A short warm up led by head coach Terry Robinson will get participants ready for the 11.45am start.

Whether you’re a member of the cricket club or not, anyone is welcome to take part and help raise money for this great cause.

To make the event fun and to add a little competition the club is encouraging people to wear fancy dress - prizes will be given for the best on the day) or alternatively cricket whites.

Participants can download a sponsor form from www.sportrelief.com and, as long as you raise £5 or more (£10 per family), you can take part for free.

Alternatively, if you donate £5/£10 yourself, there’s no need to collect any sponsors.

All entrance money will be given to Sport Relief.

There will also be a cake sale and raffle in aid of the Cricket Club, so any donations would be gratefully received.

Finally – if everyone’s not too worn out from all the running around – the Youth Registration Evening will be taking place from 6.30pm.

Also at the Grove Sports Centre, this year’s registration evening has a different format to previous years.

There will be the chance to meet the Junior Coaching Team – which the club has invested a lot in to make it one of the best structures around – as well as other committee members.

You’ll be able to order the new club shirt & training gear and there will also be a “new to you” kit sale, where players can swap/trade old kit – so please bring along anything you may have grown out of.

The Registration Evening will start at 6.30pm for under 9s, 11s and 13s, and 7.30pm for under 15s and 17s.

The club always welcomes new players, as well as anyone who can offer their skills to help run the club – umpiring, scoring, coaching, fundraising and groundwork.

Club spokesman Adam Blower said “The entire day and especially the evening, should give a great insight into what Nailsea Cricket Club is all about.

"It’s a great opportunity for any locals with a cricketing interest to find out more about what’s going on at the club, both on and off the field”.
