Rowing Away for Charity

A team of employees from Weston-super-Mare based, Bakers Dolphin, took to the water on Saturday in a Dragon Boat race and raised over £4,000 for The 1st Nailsea Scout Group.

 

The team of 20 employees took part in the annual Dragon Boat Festival at Bristol Harbour on September 26 2010 to raise money to help the scouts replace their Training and Activity Centre on the Clevedon Road.

 

During each race there were 16 rowers and a drummer taking part and the Bakers Dolphin group were required to race three times and coming 10th place out of 26 teams.

 

Amanda Harrington, sales and marketing director at Bakers Dolphin and team member said: “We were all quite scared in the morning but it was really fun – we didn’t even fall in!”

 

“Bakers Dolphin has chosen The 1st Nailsea Scout Group as its charity of the year as they are in desperate need of a new centre for the 240 youngsters that use it.

 

“I still can’t quite believe that we came 10th place - everyone worked really hard and we all laughed a lot!

 

The 1st Nailsea Scout Group aims to raise £250,000 through 2010 and into 2011 to replace the hall – sponsorship from the Dragon Boat Race will go towards this target.

 

The group has 240 youngsters aged from 6 – 14 years in its Beaver, Cubs and Scouts troops and offers varied and challenging indoor and outdoor activities including archery, canoeing, rock climbing, sailing and camping.

 

Amanda continued: “If people still want to sponsor us they can – we want to help the scouts reach their target as this is a great local cause!

 

“The training and activity centre is an important part of the Nailsea community and many people use it daily.

 

“The whole community is rallying around to make sure that the target is met and we are just happy to help in any way we can.”
