AS part of the South West’s regional Love Food Hate Waste campaign, North Somerset residents can take part in a food waste diary competition and win a cookery class worth £140 at the Cookery School at Bordeaux Quay in Bristol.

North Somerset Council waste minimisation team will be at Tesco in Stockway North, Nailsea from 1pm to 5pm on Friday, October 23, where you can find out more and pick up a diary.

The West of England councils (Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire) have joined together to reduce food waste, and are asking residents to fill in a food diary over seven consecutive days, pledging to reduce food waste.

Every resident who returns a diary will receive a free Eat Well, Waste Less cookery book.

If you include a food waste reduction suggestion you will be entered into a competition to win a cookery class for you and a friend at the Cookery School worth up to £140.

Five runners-up will receive a pack of food gadgets, donated by Lakeland in Bath, including a spaghetti measurer and lock and lock containers.

Every year we throw away £4 billion worth of food because we cook or prepare too much.

This amounts to 6.7 million tonnes, and most of this is food that could have been eaten.

Each month, the average family throws away up to £50 worth of food that was bought but not eaten.

Simply by not wasting food you could save up to £600 a year.
