A planning application to extent The Glasshouse public house in Crown Glass Place has been approved by North Somerset Council. The pub has been closed since early 2010 after the previous leaseholder reportedly had financial problems and owners Nailsea Unit

Trust were forced to reclaimed the lease.

The planning application had been submitted by the current owner in September and drew numerous objections from local residents. However, the council decided that the enlargement itself would not significantly increase potential noise and nuisance levels and have therefore allowed the development.

It is understood that now planning permission has been gained, pub chain Weatherspoons will sign a new lease on the building in the next few days and start work on the alterations.

To local pubs this is terrible news, pubs in the area have no chance of competing with jd weatherspoons pricing of both the food and drink offering! FACT. For all these people saying they 'cant wait for jd to open' have no idea the worth of independent business, And I will go as far as to say these people obviously are employed rather than have their own businesses, no clue as to how this will effect the local pub trade.

North Somerset Council should hang their head in shame in granting this as they expect thousands of pounds in business rates every month WITHOUT FAIL from local pubs, but dont take into account the impact this will have on lost trade.

Dont you all think that underpriced drink will not have a detremental effect on all the massive problems that Nailsea has with drunk young people? which I may add gos largely unreported by local press, but everybody knows how bad the problem is but just gets 'swept under the carpet'

The more National chain pubs/retail shops that flood into small towns like Nailsea will see the dealth of local independant businesses that people bang on about protecting, but in reality do nothing to help. When will people see sense that this is happening at an alarming pace, with national retailers having the money and resources to take over town centres with unopposed ease.

I am looking forward to weatherspoons coming to nailsea. I think it will be a great asset to the town as long as the teenagers are kept under control. As a recycled teenager myself I know how they must feel not being old enough to participate in the joy of drinking and eating at leisure but they must realise there are a lot of recycled teenagers in nailsea who would like to visit weatherspoons without being intimidated by lots of youths hanging about outside the door of the pub.
