DRINK up thee cider and taste some real beer at the three day festival at Nailsea & Backwell Rugby Club which begins at 6pm today, July 16.

Friday is a real ale drinkers night with a musical line-up from classic to jazz with a bit of folk, rhythm & blues and Motown thrown in for good measure on Saturday and Sunday.

Somerset people can celebrate an applefest as proposals to introduce a cider tax were scrapped after a campaign led by scrumpy lovers The Wurzels.

A quarter of all profits will go to charity and the rest for developing sport at the club.

The two charities being supported are:

  • Help for Heroes is a charity that provides practical support and rehabilitation for injured service personal and their families; and
  • Nailsea Army Cadets who need to replace its Whitesfield Road cadet hut which burned down last year due to an electrical. The cadets are currently using Nailsea School for its training and parade ground.

The festival closes at 11pm tonight and opens again on Saturday from noon-11pm and Sunday noon-6pm.

Nailsea & Backwell Rugby Club is a not-for-profit organisation with more than 300 senior and junior rugby players, plus hundreds of social and casual members who use our club for social events, or are involved in other associated sporting activities.

It also plays host to Nailsea Running Club, Nailsea Ladies Hockey Club, MG Owners Club and Backwell Boxing Club.

The West End club which has conference and function facilities opens seven days a week.

At the extremely successful sixth annual festival last year Nailsea & Backwell Rugby Club raised £6,000 for Children’s Hospice South West at Wraxall.

Organisers say 'an estimated 2,000 people enjoyed the festival, and we are hoping to make it even bigger in 2010’.

Nailsea and Backwell RFC is one of a small number of clubs in England who, for the fourth consecutive year, have received the ‘Seal of Approval’ from the RFU in conjunction with Sport England, demonstrating our commitment to diversity, child protection and professional standards.
