I am a mother and my son and his friends love to play at Scotch Horn Park. It is becoming more and more frequent to see smashed glass bottles very near to the sand pit and surrounding areas. I see children happily playing in the sand without any shoes or socks on and then deciding to run over to another part of the park and I cringe at the thought of them having a shard of glass rip open their foot and in turn hurt them immensely. Who is in charge of the up keep of this park and how often is it checked. Because as far as I am concerned - I am the one who picks up the glass . . . . no one else (who is meant to do it!!) I feel as though the derelict building next to the sand pit (although a part of Nailsea's History) is beyond restoration and therefore should be taken down - this in turn will potentially reduce the number of youths hanging about that area due to it no longer being secluded. Please Please tidy up the park as more and more parents and children will be visiting it as the warmer days approach. please please before someone really hurts themselves. Michelle Penny - Nailsea

Isn’t it a pity that the thoughtless and inconsiderate actions of these ‘youths’ could potentially result is the possible closure of this fun and creative environment, where you say many youngsters love to play. What’s a little ironic is that these ‘youths, who put these youngsters in danger, are quite likely the older brother/ sister/ cousin/ friend of the family, of those same youngsters!

@mpenny96, you mention that you pickup the broken glass - good on you - the community needs people like you who don’t just simply walk-on-by. However, you do need to be careful of what you wish for. If the smashed glass bottle issue is as bad as you say I would guess if NSC was over pressed on the problem you describe, in the current economic climate of savings/cuts etc, they would look at the options, compare the increased maintenance costs with the potential legal liability/risk, and likely end up cordoning off or closing part of the facility.

It’s your community - perhaps you could encourage other concerned like-minded parents to follow your lead, take it in turns, to regularly scan the local area for broken glass etc, and remove it when found (as you have been doing). You could also, with those same like-minded parents, one evening go and speak/ engage with these ‘youths’ who hang about this locale, causing the problem you describe. It’s probably quite likely that you and the other parents will actually recognise and know these ‘youths’, and their parents. Have a word.

As to knocking down the Scotch Horn Winding Tower, as a logical or sensible solution - I don’t agree with you - I think you’re confusing issues.
