Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger says: "When there's snow on the ground, avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary."

If you do consider it necessary to travel, here are some top tips from the UK's largest road safety charity:

VISIBILITY - Get those windows completely clear before setting off

SPEED - Keep your speed right down, but don't risk losing momentum when you need it most

GEAR - Move off in a higher gear where possible to minimise wheelspin. Stay in a higher gear for better control, but change down earlier than normal to allow the engine to slow the vehicle

BRAKES - Brake gently and early to avoid locking your wheels. Braking distances on ice can be 10 times the normal distance

PLAN - Take time to plan your route and keep to busier roads, which are more likely to have been gritted.

SKID - If you find yourself in a skid, take your feet off the pedals and steer. ABS (Anti-lock braking systems) will help you to steer around obstacles, but you must still keep your speed down.
