TV presenter Martin Roberts will be at Weston College's annual Celebration of Success event next week to honour its most outstanding students.
BBC presenter Martin Roberts
The writer and presenter of the BBC's popular 'Homes Under The Hammer' property auction series will hand out more than 40 awards to students and businesses who work with the College.
Around 300 guests will gather at Weston-super-Mare's Winter Gardens on Thursday January 23 to see who has won the coveted awards, which reflect all aspects of College life.
Categories include 'student of the year' in areas including A levels, art and design, business and management, and computing. There are also categories for those on Apprenticeship schemes, and for companies and schools engaged with Weston College in business and training partnerships. Five special 'Principal's Awards', including Student Entrepreneur of the Year, will be given to students and staff who have made particularly strong contributions to the College.
Mr Roberts, an accomplished travel writer who was also a regular presenter on ITV travel show 'Wish You Were Here', will give the keynote speech.
Presiding over the evening will be Dr Paul Phillips OBE, Weston College's Principal and Chief Executive.
He said: "This is a celebration of the outstanding hard work, dedication and talent of our students across all areas of the College. We will be hearing stories of real achievement, where students have overcome considerable personal barriers to gain success. There will be accounts of remarkable academic accomplishment and innovation. We will also use this opportunity to acknowledge high performance among our business partners."
The past year has been a particularly successful one for Weston College. The first phase of an £11 million scheme to improve its South West Skills Campus on Locking Road began, and a College-backed scheme to create an enterprise and technology college near Junction 21 of the M5 was given the green light. Also, 22 per cent of degree level students received a First Class honours degree, much higher than the national average, and more than 90 per cent of College apprentices were offered permanent positions at the end of their programmes.
The Celebration of Success event will also feature a three-course dinner and a spectacular performance of song and dance by Performing Arts students.
