Mothers in the South West are just as likely to get a day trip or mini break as a present on Mother's Day this year as they are to receive the traditional gifts of flowers and chocolates.
Outings to see shows at the theatre, weekends away at the seaside and abroad and even tickets for rock concerts are likely to be tucked inside the Mother's Day card on Mothering Sunday on March 10.
West Country coach operators Bakers Dolphin say they have been doing brisk business over the last few weeks at their offices in Weston-super-Mare with people from throughout the region saying they are buying Mother's Day gifts.
Marketing Director Amanda Harrington said: "Flowers fade fast and chocolates get shared around so it seems people this year are sending their Mum's away for a memorable night out or a mini-break.
"The Spice Girls generation are all mums now and we have found that a trip to see Viva Forever, the Spice Girls musical at the Piccadilly in London are proving very popular. Many daughters are keen to go with their mums.
"Weekend favourites like shopping in Bruges are also selling well but it is surprising how many Mums will be getting a trip to see Cliff Richard at Powderham Castle, Boyzone's anniversary concerts in December, Rod Stewart in Birmingham or The Who, Quadrophenia Concert in Cardiff.
"Many of our day trips and concerts are booked online at our website but others are calling and making bookings and asking us to keep it a secret until Mother's Day. I think it just reflects the modern Mum who is more likely to be impressed with a great day out than a bouquet of flowers."
