SPEEDWAY - DOYLE SECOND IN OPENING AUSSIE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
By Deegeetee | Saturday, January 05, 2013, 20:16
The 'Cases' Somerset Rebels skipper Jason Doyle made an excellent start to the 2013 Australian Speedway Championship with a 2nd place finish in the opening round held at Gillman Raceway, while the Rebels other 2 representatives in the 3-meeting series, Alex Davies and Josh Grajczonek both made solid starts to their campaign.
After the 20 qualifying heats, it was Doyle who headed the score-chart on 14 points, which included a win over Championship favourite Troy Batchelor, his only defeat coming at the hands of Rebel team-mate Davies in heat 18, but by then Doyle had done enough to ensure his place in the 'A' Final.
It was, however, ultimately to be Batchelor's day as he won the 'A' Final, thereby gaining revenge for his defeat to Doyle when the pair met in heat 9, the pair being followed home by Rohan Tungate and Micky Dyer, the latter booking his place in the final by virtue of winning the 'B' Final.
After a disappointing start which saw Alex Davies pointless after his initial two rides, an engine failure at the start of heat 5 not helping his cause, he came back strongly to finish on 7 points, which included 2 race wins, while new Somerset signing Josh Grajczonek also finished on 7 points from his 5 qualifying rides, the pair just missing out on a place in the 'B' Final by a single point.
'A' Final - 1) Troy Batchelor, 2) Jason Doyle, 3) Rohan Tungate, 4) Micky Dyer
'B' Final - 1) Micky Dyer, 2) Cameron Woodward, 3) Dakota North, 4) Justin Sedgmen
Jason Doyle - 14, Troy Batchelor - 13, Rohan Tungate - 9, Dakota North - 9, Micky Dyer - 9, Cameron Woodward - 9, Justin Sedgmen - 8, Alex Davies - 7, Davey Watt - 7, Josh Grajczonek - 7, Mark Lemon - 6, Sam Masters - 5, Ty Proctor - 5, Kozza Smith - 4, Adam Shields - 4, Cameron Heeps - 4
The 2nd round of the 3-meeting Championship series will be held at Undera (Victoria) on Wednesday 9th January
