Peacocks in Nailsea shopping centre is still open

Peacocks remains open in Nailsea shopping centre despite the budget fashion chain going into administration this week.

A total of 249 staff - almost half the head office workforce in Cardiff - was made redundant on Thursday.

Nationally there are 9,600 jobs at risk after a management buyout deal collapsed at the last minute.

The collapse of Peacocks is the biggest retail failure since Woolworths went bust in 2008 with 27,000 redundancies.

Woolworths had a store in Nailsea High Street but luckily The Original Factory Shop took over the premises.

KPMG was appointed administrator on Wednesday night and said all Peacocks' 611 stores and 49 concessions would be kept open while it looks for a buyer.

KPMG UK joint administrator Richard Fleming expected 'considerable interest' and was 'hopeful a big chunk of the business' would be sold.

There will be no immediate redundancies, but Fleming said there would 'inevitably' be big job losses to come.

The Nailsea store at Somerset Square opened nearly a decade ago and employs approximately 10 full and part-time staff.

There is also a Peacocks store at Wynham Way, Portishead,

which opened two years ago and has more than six staff.

Woolworths took over the former Kwik Save supermarket in the High Street in October 2007 but after just 16 months of trading it closed. Peacocks began a sale offering up to 70 per cent off this afternoon (Thursday).

When did Nailsea have a Woolworths? Kwik Save were the previous tenants before the factory shop.Really, you should be warning potential Peacocks customers to read the liqidators notice on the window and then cosider carefully if it is worth buying anything.
