Library opens for less hours

Nailsea library is likely to open six less hours a week at as North Somerset Council looks to make savings.

The authority said its library service needs to save £347,000 over the next three years and a consultation into its proposals to change opening hours and staffing levels is to take place.

Self-service terminals could also be introduced in most libraries and the local community involved. The council has to save a total of £47.3m.

Views from members of the public will be invited from Monday, January16.

There has been no decision on moving from its proposed building into a retail unit at Crown Glass Place.

The current library in Nailsea is said to be riddled with 'concrete cancer'.

New sports pavilion

Nailsea people are invited to learn about plans to build a cricket and football pavilion at The Grove playing fields on Sunday, January 29.

There is an urgent need to replace the sunken, temporary changing rooms as they do not conform to current league standards , said Nailsea Playing Fields Association spokesman Maureen Brady.

Mrs Brady added: This must be done within a three to four year timeframe.

The NPFA has invited interested parties to an informal consultation at the Grove Sports & Social Centre on Sunday, January 29, from 2-6pm.

It is hoped the new building which will cost approximately £400,000 will include a tea room.

Design and site plans will be on display.

For those unable to attend the presentation material will be on display at the Tithe Barn unitl Friday, February 10.

Park name changes

North Somerset Council wants to change the name of the park next to the Scotch Horn Centre - again.

The playing field which houses a BMX park, rose garden and playground is used by walkers, picnikers and footballers and was originally called Scotch Horn park.

But in 2000 coupled with some upgrading thanks to a windfall from the building of the Tesco supermarket it changed its name to the Millennium Park - unfortunately at the time workmen spelt 'millennium' wrongly on the gates and these had to be redone.

But now the district council is asking the town council to agree to calling it the Queen Elizabeth II playing field to commemorate the diamond jubilee anniversary.

If they dont rename the park (as presumably it wont be free), perhaps they could keep the library open longer?
