Odd Down Reserves 1 Nailsea
Nailsea travelled to
the suburbs of Bath to play Odd Down Reserves looking to extend their unbeaten
start to the season.
The early skirmishes
of the game were even with no team taking control. On 20 minutes Ben Cook made
a strong run down the right finding Jim Lee but the strikers shot was blocked
by a well timed challenge. Two minutes later a good passing movement between
Ben Pratt and Sam Long saw the resultant cross being hacked away over the bar
by the Odd Down defence.
United were now
beginning to string passes together with Matt Long shooting just over the bar. Almost
immediately the same player was on the end of a flowing move but he just failed
to beat the keeper. Nailsea took the lead in the 35th minute
following a throw in by Rob Brown which was headed on by Stuart Lee to the
waiting Matt Long who turned and shot in one movement to send the ball past the
home keeper. It looks like Matt is following on from last season with his
The remainder of the
half brought no more goals with only Aaron Latta firing wide following good approach
work by Sam & Matt Long.
Half Time Score. Odd Down Reserves 0 Nailsea United 1.
The second half
started with Odd Down having a good chance of equalising but the shot went
wide. Nailsea doubled the lead on 49 minutes with an own goal from a Matt Long
corner, the defender under pressure from Jim Lee could only poke the ball over
his own line. This second reverse saw the home side up the tempo with a snap
shot on 53 minutes bringing a good diving save from Nailsea keeper Jason Small.
The injured Aaron Latta was replaced by James Springett.
On 60 minutes a
chance created in a similar fashion to the opening goal saw Rob Brown finding
Jim Lee with an accurate throw in, the ball was glanced on to Matt Long but
this time he could not convert. Odd Down reduced the deficit to one goal when a
United goal kick was pushed forward allowing the home attacker to catch the
United defence square before placing the ball past Jason Small.
The home side were
now looking for the equaliser but could not break down the United defence. In
fact it was the visitors that created the next scoring opportunity with 10
minutes remaining when Jim Lee received the ball on the left hand side of goal,
showing good control his shot was pushed out to safety by the home keeper. With
two minutes of normal time remaining Steve Lester did well to conjure up a pass
to Ben Cook who tested the keeper with a fine shot.
During the time added
on by the referee the home side threw everything at the Nailsea defence but
could not find the net. The last act of the match saw Ben Cook being replaced
by Ryan King.
Final Score. Odd Down Reserves 1 Nailsea United 2.
This win preserved
the unbeaten start to the season by United but they only showed last season's
form in patches giving the ball away on too many occasions. The next match is
on Tuesday August 20th with the visit to South Bristol side Stockwood Green.
Kick Off. 6.30pm.
Next match at The
Grove is on Wednesday August 21st when the Reserves take on
Winscombe. Kick Off 6.30pm.
