Nailsea United 2 Cutters
The first round of
the Somerset Senior Cup saw Nailsea United at home to Bristol based Cutters
Friday. United were looking to carry their impressive league form into the cup
The opening 25
minutes were played without a definite goal chance for either side until a good
move down the left flank saw Cutters take the lead with a shot that was well
placed beyond the reach of keeper Scott Kendall. This reverse saw Nailsea up
the tempo with Matt Long shooting over under strong pressure from a Cutters
The equaliser came 5
minutes before the break with a passing movement on the left that saw Jim Lee
set up Harry Hope who finished confidentially inside the far post. It was the
visitors that finished the stronger with two efforts in the last few minutes of
the first half going wide of the Nailsea post.
Nailsea simply could
not get going in the first half with a number of passes not finding their man
giving Cutters the opportunity to turn defence into attack on too many
occasions for comfort.
Half Time. Nailsea
United 1 Cutters Friday 1
Nailsea started the second
half in a more purposeful fashion with Jim Lee just firing wide in the opening minute.
A neat move saw Alex Goodwin play the ball to Steve Lester setting up a chance
for Matt Long who could not get a good connection to his shot. Ten minutes into
the half the dangerous visitors nearly retook the lead bringing a good save
from Scott Kendall at the near post. Immediately Nailsea responded when a throw
in by Rob Brown found its way to Jim Lee but his shot was sent well over the
Further home pressure
saw Steve Lester fire wide from a Matt Long pass as United began to exert more
control. With 15 minutes of normal time remaining Matt Long was replaced by
Ryan King. With his first touch King sent in a corner which was glanced just
wide by Stuart Lee. No further goals were scored before the referee blew for
the end of the 90 minutes with the game going into extra time
It was Cutters that
had the first chance to score with Scott Kendall doing well with a one on one
situation. Next saw Nailsea coming close with a header by James Springett going
over the bar following a cross by Jim Lee. The final United substitution took
place with Jim Lee being replaced by Liam Lester allowing Stuart Lee to lead
It looked like the
match would be decided on penalties as no side were able to score until an individual
piece of close control by Alex Goodwin finally unlocked the Cutters defence.
With three minutes remaining the young winger threaded his way into the penalty
area to create a shooting chance and made no mistake to send the ball well wide
of the Cutters keeper into the back of the net for what turned out to be the
deciding goal. The last minute saw Ryan King send a 30 yard free kick onto the
top of the Cutters crossbar with the keeper well beaten.
Final Score. Nailsea United 2 Cutters Friday 1.
It will be the
Nailsea name that will go into the hat for the next round but they made hard
work of seeing off a resolute Cutters Friday side who until they tired in the latter part of the game
looked like they could cause an upset.
Next Saturday August
14th United resume their league programme with the long journey to
Ilminster Town. I am sure that the United management will be looking for a better
all round display to keep up the momentum as they compete for league honours.
