Berrow 4 Nailsea United 1
United travelled to Berrow on Saturday for what they knew would be testing
fixture. The weather on the Somerset coast saw very gusty winds which no doubt
would have an impact on the game.
Berrow kicked off
with the wind in their backs but were troubled in the third minute when a throw in by Rob Brown was nodded on by Jim
Lee to Steve Lester whose headed attempt was straight at the home keeper. The
home side then began to use the gusty conditions with Nailsea keeper Jason
Small doing well to turn over the bar a free kick on seven minutes.
Berrow took the lead
after 12 minutes with an opportunistic shot from their own half which sailed on
the wind over Jason Small to find the back of the United net. Nailsea then
began to play good football on the ground with a move from the back seeing Steve
Lester once again testing the keeper this time with a shot. The away side were
now dominating the game and could have equalised on 25 minutes with Jim Lee
breaking away down the right to fire a cross to colleague Matt Long who was
driven wide of the goal before his shot was saved by the Berrow keeper.
Berrow were unlucky
not to double their lead on the half hour mark with another long shot that
rebounded from the Nailsea post. United were playing some delightful football
but just could not find the finishing touch to for the equaliser which their approach
play deserved. As so often happens when one side is dominating the game but are
unable to capitalise the opposition score against the run of play. This was the
case for the second Berrow goal when they took advantage of an indecisive
United defence to double their lead five minutes before the break. Nailsea went
further behind on the stroke of half time when a move down the right flank saw
the ball played to a suspiciously off side Berrow attacker who finished well to
see the home side go into the break with a three goal lead.
consider themselves unlucky with the half time score line but they had enough
chances to be in front.
Half Time Score. Berrow 3
Nailsea United 0
Nailsea simply had to
score early on with the wind now in their backs to put pressure on the Berrow
defence. However, it was Berrow that scored with a deflected shot that gave
Jason Small no chance. Most of the play was now in the Berrow half but United
had to wait until the 67th minute to score when a Matt Long corner
from the left was deflected by a Berrow player over the line for a own goal.
This gave the visitors a glimmer of hope with Ben Cook making way for Sam Long
as the team was reshuffled in an attempt to find more goals.
knew that today would not be their team's day when a goal attempt on 80 minutes
thudded against the Berrow upright to safety. Harry Hope then gave way to Louis
Keane with seven minutes remaining. The latter had a good opportunity to reduce
the arrears with two minutes remaining but fired over from close range. With normal
time up United had Jason Small to thank when saving well with a Berrow forward
bearing down on goal. Finally Stuart Lee left the field with a facial injury
being replaced by Liam Lester.
Final score. Berrow
4 Nailsea United 1.
This was a flattering
result for Berrow who were outplayed for a large portion of the match but used
the wind to their advantage to take the game away from Nailsea in the first
half. Other results meant that United remain in second place but have now lost
their unbeaten record.
