Masked raiders broke into The Southern Co-operative store in Nailsea in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Security staff were threatened and a quantity of cigarettes stolen in the raid.

Police investigating the robbery could not confirm the brand or number of cigarettes taken but said a member of staff was threatened.

A spokesman for the company said: "At approximately 3am on Sunday morning, January 13, The Southern Co-operative store at Hannah More Road was broken into by two males wearing masks.

"A quantity of goods was stolen but fortunately no-one was hurt.

"The Southern Co-operative is working with the police who are investigating the incident.

"The store reopened for business at noon on Sunday."

The convenience store which it situated on the edge of Nailsea close to an industrial estate and residential properties has been trading in Nailsea for 18 months.

It is usually open for business 7am-11pm daily and as well as cigarettes it sells a range of groceries, newspapers and alcohol.

It was closed for several hours while the police were in attendance.

Police urge anyone with information to contact them on 101 or the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
