Dark clothes, few lights, no helmets

A FEW weeks ago I was in Prince Street during the rush hour. It was 5.30pm and dark. In the space of five minutes ten cyclists passed me.

All wore dark clothing, five had no lights back or front, six had no helmets. A couple had back lights but not front and two had front but not back lights. I saw four ride through red lights, weave through the traffic.

What about giving the motorist a chance to see them and bring down the accident rate in this city?

Helmet silliness aside.. (though I DO usually wear one on my commutes because that's when I feel most at risk)....

I actually disagree with SVillePhil in that in my experience the un-illuminated outnumber those assaulting my eyes by 10 to 1. There's one chap who compounds his poor judgement by always being on the 'phone without even his spare hand on the handlebar.

They're a menace on the railway path partly because bicycle lights can help make the unlit pedestrians and poorly-controlled dogs slightly less invisible. (I wouldn't walk on the railway path at night without lights)

Quite why the police can't simply wait at the city end and try to re-educate some of these idiots is beyond me.

I agree this looks unbelievable. 10 cyclists in 5 minutes of which only one had front and back lights - really? Could it be that this person actually saw one cyclist without lights and then thought "Well, it could have been nine, couldn't it. Who will know? And I hate cyclists anyway."?

I find this unbelievable. I cycle down the Bristol to Bath railway path against the flow of traffic and nearly every cyclist I pass owns such bright front lights that I am rendered blind. I'm certain they can be seen...from space.
