Successful Bristol entrepreneur and guitarist, Chris Budd, launched his first novel as his own group played for the last time.

On Friday, (Jan 24th) nearly 200 people attended The Tunnels in Bristol where Chris signed copies of his psychological thriller – 'A Bridge of Straw' and his band Mangetout played.

The 46-year-old independent financial adviser of Backwell, said: "I was overwhelmed by support for my book and flattered to be asked to sign so many. The gig was great too, Mangetout went out on a real high."

A Bridge of Straw is about a dark secret in a band and the title is also a real song Chris wrote soon after meeting his now wife, Susie, who is a Bristol-based oncology nurse.

He said: "Susie was working in Australia and it was so far away to maintain a relationship. The lyrics are about the fragile nature of love. They worked because Susie returned, married me and we have a daughter and son."

'Bridge of Straw' is about a secret so terrible that the novel's musical protagonist, Mack, chooses to lose his family rather than reveal it.

Chris added: "Sixteen years later, Mack's son, Johnny, tries to discover what happened in a hotel room so many years ago, with potentially devastating consequences.

"There is a dark twist which I found upsetting to write and an ending which may lend itself to a sequel."

Chris is company director of nine-strong Ovation Finance in Whiteladies Road, which he named after the guitar he plays.

He began 'A Bridge of Straw' four years ago after he was asked to test the skills of a new business coach.

He recalled: "Three sessions changed my life. I realised you have to understand yourself, what you want out of life and achieve it. I was so impressed I trained as a business coach.

"Writing was my unfulfilled need which I'd put to one side while making my business a success and bringing up the children.

"I took every Wednesday off to write. I'm thrilled to have my book out because it's my dream comes true.

"I'm looking forward to getting feedback from readers and writing more. I've got lots of other ideas for novels since I've carved out the time to create them."

Bridge of Straw published by SilverWood Books is available for £8.99 from Amazon and The Book Depository or via Chris' website where you also here the song.
